Background and study aims: The depth of invasion of the bowel wall influences the treatment of colorectal laterally spreading tumors (LSTs). The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk factors and patterns of submucosal invasion in a large series of LSTs that were removed en bloc.

Conclusions: Because of a substantial risk of submucosal invasion and multifocal invasion, granular type LSTs with a large nodule or depression and nongranular type LSTs should be endoscopically removed en bloc.

The Invasion Epub

One of the larger books of the Images of War series, describing what was then the largest amphibious assault ever undertaken. A concise narrative accompanies the five chapters which look at the build-up to the invasion, the state of the Axis defences and the difficult terrain of the island, the commanders and troops involved, the landing itself, and the advance inland. As ever it is the considerable collection of large and rarely published photographs which take centre stage, each of which have been carefully selected to highlight a very broad range of equipment and subjects. These include the naval armada, amphibious landings, bombing, dug-in artillery, armour, mine clearance, and airborne troops, and together they are an impressive and vivid record of one of the Second World War's great set piece operations.

In 1943, British, Canadian and American forces launched a seaborne attack against Germany's Axis partner, Italy. It was the first step in the war to free Europe of the Nazi yoke. The target was Sicily. The invasion was code named Operation Husky. On July 10 1943, the British 1st Division successfully fought their way ashore and captured the bombed and ruined port of Pantelleria. In his book 'Images of War, The invasion of Sicily 1943', Jon Diamond provides a gallery of rare photographs from wartime archives. The invasion was preceded by an airborne invasion by British and American airborne forces. Tragically many dropped into the sea and drowned. The invasion barges passed through the men in the water, ignoring their pleas for help, and sped towards the heavily defended beaches. The town was swiftly captured by British troops and in the first week 20,000 Italian soldiers surrendered. The photographs are predominately of Canadian and American forces: one interesting point is the photographs show American airborne troops carrying a reserve chute. The British airborne troop were only carried one and it was only in 1957 were they issued with a reserve chute when Britain became a member of NATO.The photographs give a rare ugly glimpse of war, each fallen soldier has a family, street fighting and an army on the move with donkeys and tanks, each playing its part. An absorbing read.

I have to admit that even thought I have lived in East Anglia for the past twenty years. I had heard of the odd possible landings by the Germans on the Norfolk-Suffolk coastline during WWII. But these have usually been based not on an invasion but more to do with maritime problems. The film 'The Eagle has Landed', was to be based on the North Norfolk coastline. A well researched book open for your own interpretation on what did or did not happen.

I have to admit that even though I have lived in East Anglia for the past twenty-eight years, and have been coming here since the late 1960s, I had no prior knowledge of a German invasion, albeit a small one. Obviously, with Martin's fascinating book now behind me, I am convinced of it's authenticity. To describe it as "thrilling" is to underplay its importance, and I am utterly fascinated by Martin's claims of covers-up. This is a Boys' Own Paper story of the highest order.

Martin Bowman's interesting, fact packed book poses the question did Germany carry out commando raids along the Britain's east coast? In 1940 the British government ministers and military prepared for an invasion while, in some areas locals formed unofficial Home Guard units arming themselves with private weapons including bayonets welded on to pieces of pipe. The government responded with recruiting volunteers for Local Defence Volunteers [LDVs], Home Guard and little known Auxiliary Army. This was a secret army which would remain under cover until enemy forces over-ran the area, then emerge behind enemy lines and attack its line of communications. Military supplies and weapons were secretly stockpiled locally. Life expectance for members of this unit was two weeks! While Britain prepared for the expected invasion the German military formed the Brandenburg Kompanie, a highly trained, well-equipped, parachute trained unit which would lead the initial assault, carryout sabotage, capture roads and bridges ahead of the main force. Although 'Operation Sealion', Hitler's plan to invade Britain, never materialised he still advocated 'one or two small invasions' [commando raids]! It was against this background that rumours and speculation spread that German forces had carried out an unsuccessful invasion in East Anglia. Rumour fed on rumour as reports, on both sides of the Channel, spoke of thousands of casualties and burnt bodies. Something occurred in East Anglia in 1940 but official files on the landings are missing. Martin Bowman has carried a thorough investigation into the mystery and written a page turner of story.

Following the raid on Pearl Harbor and the entry of the United States into World War II, President Franklin D. Roosevelt identified the European theatre as his country's priority. Their first joint operation with the British was an amphibious invasion of French North Africa, designed to relieve pressure on their new Soviet allies, eliminate the threat of the French navy joining the Germans, and to shore up the vulnerability of British imperial possessions and trade routes through the Mediterranean.Operation Torch was the largest and most complex amphibious invasion of its time. In November 1942, three landings took place simultaneously across the French North African coast in an ambitious attempt to trap and annihilate the Axis' North African armies between the invading forces under General Eisenhower and British Field-Marshall Montgomery's Eighth Army in Egypt. Using full colour artwork, maps and contemporary photographs, this is the thrilling story of this complex operation.

The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel written by H. G. Wells and originally published in 1898. It is the first account in literature of an alien invasion of Earth and was highly influential in the science fiction genre.

The novel is divided into two parts, the first describes the arrival of the extraterrestrial beings and their first actions on Earth, while the second relates the invasion itself. The first part focuses on the description of the Martians and their ships, while the second describes the resistance of the humans and the war against the invaders and the Martians' attempt to survive in the terrestrial environment.

Malaria infection begins when an infected female Anopheles mosquito bites an individual and releases Plasmodium sporozoites, the motile and infective form of the parasite, into the skin. The deposited sporozoites migrate through the skin, enter the circulatory system, and traffic to the liver. This migration requires traversal of the sporozoite through diverse cell types of distinct host tissues. Inside the liver, Plasmodium sporozoites first undergo mandatory, asymptomatic, acyclic intrahepatic development before mature merozoites egress and infect red blood cells. The cyclic blood stage involves repeated rounds of invasion and replication within red blood cells and is responsible for all the disease symptoms and complications. During the blood stage, some parasites develop into gametocytes, which are the first step in the sexual cycle. The Plasmodium life cycle continues as a mosquito feeds on an infected host and takes up gametocytes in a blood meal. The parasites undergo sexual reproduction in the mosquito, which results in mature sporozoites that then propagate the next cycle of infection.

TRAP also contains a TSR domain and is involved in host invasion and gliding motility. TRAP localizes to the plasma membrane and translocates from the anterior to the posterior end of the sporozoite during invasion. In TRAP, the N-terminus encompasses a rigid domain that shows structural homology to the von Willebrand factor (vWF) type A-domain (Fig 1B) [13]. This vWF domain is followed by the flexible TSR domain. At the C-terminus, TRAP contains a conserved cytoplasmic tail that interacts with the gliding motor of the parasite. TRAP is thought to function via a stick-and-slip model [13]. When a substrate binds to the metal-ion-dependent-adhesive-site (MIDAS) of the vWF domain, the vWF domain becomes activated and assists in the formation of extensible β-ribbons between vWF and TSR domains that link the invading sporozoite surface to its gliding motor, an apicomplexa specific, actomyosin-based locomotory system (Fig 1B) [14]. In Plasmodium, stage-specific TRAP members exist that are essential for the invasion of the merozoite (MTRAP), ookinete (CTRAP), or salivary gland sporozoites (TRAP) [14]. Recently, integrin αvβ3, a heterodimer of integrin alpha v and integrin beta 3, was identified as the host receptor for P. falciparum TRAP using a systematic extracellular protein screening approach [15]. An inactivated adenovirus-based multiple epitope TRAP (ME-TRAP) vaccine is shown to protect animals and humans against infection [16].

Unlike all other stages, the fluidic nature of blood stage infection subsides the requirement of early traversal but complicates the invasion process. Red cell invasion by the parasite involves 1) initial interactions causing erythrocyte deformation, 2) apical interactions and invasion, and 3) a final recovery phase. This review covers the apical invasion and the parasite ligands involved therein (Fig 1C). Reticulocyte-binding ligand (RBL) and erythrocyte-binding like (EBL) are two critical protein families involved in red blood cell invasion (Fig 1C). 2ff7e9595c
